USING WASTE TO REHABILITATE
Rodinia’s zero waste process uses multiple waste streams from separate sources to eliminate red muds and generate 2 valuable products – engineered soil for agriculture and specialty metal oxides.
Microbially assisted neutralisation (bioneutralisation), utilising waste biomass materials as the primary reagents, is used to initially reduce the alkalinity of Red Mud to neutral.
A ready source of alternative biomass e.g. sugar cane waste and dunder (rum production effluent) in Jamaica, is required to generate the organic acid for bioneutralisation. There are a wide range of biomass alternatives available including citrus pulp, coffee grounds and general green (municipal) waste.
